Greater white-toothed shrew acoustic survey
Targeted survey.
Part of the GLNPs data resilience project
Following the recent discovery of the greater white-toothed shrew near Lincoln, a new monitoring project is using acoustic detectors to track this non-native species. By deploying high-frequency sensors in local hedgerows, we can non-invasively capture the shrew's unique vocalizations and primitive echolocation.
This "listening" approach allows for rapid mapping of the population without the stress of traditional trapping. Because this species has been known to outcompete native pygmy shrews, these acoustic surveys are vital for understanding its expansion and protecting Lincolnshire's delicate ecological balance.
